Laser Radial World Championships - Team NZL - Stiff competition |
FORTALEZA, BRAZIL-(9-12-2005) Just one day of racing remains in the Laser Radial World Championships in Brazil. 19-year old Blair McLay has continued to improve and today climbed into medal contention. He is now third on the leader board after a 4th and a 2nd in racing on the penultimate day of the regatta.
Competition is stiff in the Olympic class women’s fleet and the kiwi girls weren’t able to improve their standings. Sara Winther placed 19th and 15th and retains her spot in 17th. Jo Aleh had a disappointing day and slides down to 23rd overall.
Brazilian sailor Eduardo C. de Magalhaes Couto leads the Open fleet with only two races remaining he has a 10 point lead over Brad Funk (USA). McLay is 8 points back from Funk and 7 points clear of 4th place. While McLay’s main focus is the Olympic class Laser he chose to attend this Laser Radial World Championship to further his international experience.
McLay will be hoping to continue his current form and to finish this regatta strongly. He will go on to compete in the Youth Laser Radial World Championships which follow on from the Open competition and start next week.
Expected favourite in the women’s, Paige Railey of the USA has come through with another consistent day on the water and retains her place at the top of the fleet. She has a 17 point lead over second place despite not having won a single race in the regatta.
